How often should I get my gutters cleaned?
Gutter cleaning and maintenance
With gutter cleaning being one of the least aesthetically satisfying chores out there, it always leads us to ask “how often do I really need to clan my gutters?”
We all prefer to see the visible after effects of a job we have outsourced, whether this is to do with construction, painting cleaning and so on. However when you have had the gutter cleaners around, the house looks.... pretty much the same!
So the big question is, how do I know when to clean my gutters?
How do I know if my gutters need cleaning right now?
First of all there are signs that will tell you your gutter clean may be overdue:
- Weeds or plantation growing over the gutters
- Visible leaking or overflowing from the gutters
- Damp inside the house (most commonly by the edges of your roof)
- You cant remember the last time they were cleaned
You may be thinking to yourself... thats pretty obvious, but some of these can be a little more subtle than you may imagine. Inspecting your house on a rainy day is obviously not top of the bucket list. However the problems that these issues can cause are well worth sticking a rain coat on for a couple minutes per year. Beware if you have had these problems for a while the damage may have already started to set in.
Now you know how to find out if your gutters were overdue a clean. But what if you just want to know how often they should be cleaned to avoid these problems altogether?
How Often should I book in for a gutter clean?
Not all houses need the same attention when it comes to gutter cleaning, but here are the main things to look for:
How many trees surround your house?
Trees are a major cause of gutter blockages, especially in Autumn when most will shed their leaves. If the shedding is quite dramatic and your constantly sweeping
them from the ground, then it may be a good idea to swep those gutters once a year too. Also look out, as some trees shed throughout the year, these houses may need their gutters cleaned twice a year. Alternatively you can work with your local gutter cleaner to find another solution.
How mossy is your roof?
This is one of the main culprits for messing up gutters, your roof is sabotaging them!
You can usually get a good idea from walking across the road and inspecting the visible lumps of moss that have grown on the roof, if there is an excess. If there is an abundance, it is likely they are falling into your gutters. If there is a substantial amount lingering on your roof, then it would be worth having your gutters cleaned once a year. There is a more permanent solution to this, which is to book in for a roof clean, thisshould eliminate the chances of moss growing back for a number of years!
How much water does your downpipe take?
Generally there is a downpipe for each side of a house, however sometimes a single downpipe may drain water for two sides of a house, even more on occasion. This increases the probability of a blockage as there is more water and debris being directed through the downpipe, also there is a longer length of horizontal gutter leading to the downpipe which means debris have to travel a lot further before getting flushed away.
When was the last time you had your gutters cleaned?
If your answer to this question is... I cant remember, then it is worth finding a company with good ratings and reviews to give your gutters a clean and report back to you their findings.
Ultimately the goal here is to find out how regularly you need the gutters done, so if you get the same company to return in a years time, they should be able to accurately tell you how quickly the gutters fill up and how often you should be getting them cleaned.
